methodism

Okay, our good friend and up-and-coming theologian Pearlie has published a survey. She has worded it like I did most of the work. So I must complete the compliment and said that the idea originated from Pearlie who also collated all of it.

The other thing is - though I have had been at the forefront of many 'battles', it does take some getting use to seeing one mentioned quite so often in a paragraph!

Incidentally I have just finished reading the Reader and am still reeling from it. However, I am glad to say that I like John Wesley's doctrine of Sanctification. It is practical and a relief. The idea of one's christian perfection or spiritual transformation is progressive takes away a lot of pressure. Pressure as in - non-believers' and even some of our fellow Christians' expectations that we will be a saint literally, the minute we accept Christ.

In fact, a 'perfect' Christian is one who "becomes more and more aware of his moral, psychological and intellectual imperfections". So the more I admit I am a sinner, the more I will grow in grace. And if I continue to maintain an unbroken relationship to Christ, it will bring an increasing sensitivity to God's will'.(Works, XI, 384) Amen indeed!

Simple logic? The danger is when one indulges in being a sinner, for whatever reasons and goes for multiple confessions or repentances! Sadly, it is rampant, even among our seniors!

woolf and Job

I just read the 'The quotation of the day'; it says:-

"I read the book of Job last night, I don't think God comes out well in it".
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)

Well, it is just one of many opinions!

of siew mai and traditions

I was going to take the day off so to speak, from reading and assignments yesterday... So I had my niece over. We baked late into the night or rather early morning and thought we could have a lie-in. Of course, it was not to be so.. We have to wake up at 6.30am on a Saturday morning. It was to rush over to school to hand over the key to the PBSM room!

So what do we do after that? We drove all the way down to Petaling Street for breakfast. I remember that many years ago my parents would wake us up early on weekends and go to this shop called Yook Woh Hin for 'tim-sum' breakfast. We could never understand why or what is so great about this place or food. Our thought was - hei, it's a weekend and we want to sleep in as it is not a school day! Anyway I thought I should initiate the next generation to something we used to or really forced to do - when we were young.

Well, it is good to revisit. At least it was a good experience for my niece. There are two marked differences from our time. First there is a marked reduction or no pork fat in the 'siew mai' and 'tai-pow'! So it is much healthier but 'tougher'! Then there were more families - ie other parents used to drag their kids to such places. But it is not so now! My niece feels out of place as she was the youngest. Her comment was - every one here looks like kung-kung/grandpa and por-por/grandma, even the waiters and waitress!

So what has happened to this tradition - where do families go for their early morning tim sum. Maybe the preference is for more posh restuarants now that our standards of living is higher! Definitely it is the sign of the times! In this post modern age, there are much less occasions that families share. If at all, it probably would have been the early Mcdonalds breakfast meals!

Perhaps the most telling observation my niece made was - the old waiters and waiteress are so polite! Humility and servitude verses 'I', me and myself? We as parents of the next generation must take responsiblity for the standards and traditions we set.

a time for praise

Yup I know that we are suppose to praise the Lord for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us, all the time. However, there is really a time, when we are consciously grateful.

The week started with foreboding. First it is a rush to deliver an assignment. During the drive I realised that it was a bit weak in one part and I should have taken a different approach; but never mind, there are just too much on hand and I have to move on. Then there is a summon for a regional meeting next week with so much to prepare. Last but not least, the week will end with a meeting, which I am really not looking forward to. However, by Friday 5pm, it was suddenly a cause for celebration.

So this is that special time when one needs to sit and reflect on His faithfulness:-
a time His blessings has been bountiful
a time the nasty negotiation is finally over
a time we reflect on His mysterious ways
when only but His hand could have created the turn of events
which caught me by surprise and totally stunned me
a time when I could only hold up my hands, look at the sky and ask
why Lord, why are You so kind to me...
a time to indulge and wallow in His presence and love..
a time when the only recourse is to celebrate and rejoice..
in His glory

It is also a time when we could only but pray
it will turn out as well for many..
as much as He has blessed and loved me....

What better form of celebration but to indulge in sushi, sashimi and green tea icecream...
and yes I did!

My Orchid collection:-
Believe it or not, the first two orchids are bought at a nursery where I go for a change of scenery - near STM. Surprisingly, it was supposedly imported from Taiwan.

my collection of local wild orchids, the yellow and white version has not flowered yet.

These are local 'Pigeon' orchids, generally found growing wild, on huge trees.

a weekend to remember

First I accepted to be the liturgist this weekend, in thanksgiving for finishing my 17th! Not a good form of thanksgiving and my excuse is only human.

Then I asked Doc to doctor an insurance claim. All very legitimate and recommended by the agent! Of course Doc would not - proving once again his integrity!

Then I went for Aunt Grace's funeral service. I am so touched and blessed! Aunt Grace's spirit came to say good bye!

Bishop Yap Kim Hao gave a wonderful eulogy of a lady of breeding and substance! Amazing too that Bishop Yap is still so eloquent and full of presence at his age! Good too to see all the 'old' pastors like Rev Ng Ee Lin, Rev Wong En Mein and Rev Chew Tow Yow in attendance. Can't help but to note sarcastically, that all these 'presence' has kept the senior pastor in line and in awe! Not every one is quite so blessed though. Many of the 'friends' are really going down hill.

Sad that I saw another young soul of 23 who needs mentoring! Sigh! Do I really have to, my Lord? Is this my calling? I really just want to go 'a wandering, with a knapsack on my back'!

Sad too that not all passing of time means we are any smarter or for the better! It was nine years since I stepped into the Sanctuary. Yes, the design has changed. No, it is not the physical outlook which I need to get used to or giving the new a chance. Hopefully it is a little maturing on my part, as I really don't think there is any necessity to go back again! Neither do I need to be attached to a structure, physically, literally or figuratively. I am thankful that I no longer need to be 'attached' for reasons of climbing up the ladder, for a living or a calling! Although I acknowledge that it is convenient to be as it comes along with the ability to exercise one's contribution within a society!

Worshiping God is not confined but every moment and in the heart!

of things to come..

I have not been able to write at least one post every two days, as I promise myself. To date, this month has been a busy month. It has also been tiring too. When we have lectures over two weekends, it is literally 21days of work without a break!

Yes, it is good to be busy, especially in these economic trend. People are not spending. First the festivities are over, so there is really no need to spend extra, what with the year end bonuses mostly depleted by now. Access to the modern media has done a good job too - creating a foreboding. I heard too that those who have had mutual funds etc have just received their statements - the points may have increased, but the value has been down by 30%! I hear too rumours come July 09, the unemployment rate will jump even more, as companies review the first half year's performances. Apparently our local banks are contemplating vvs etc to the amount of 3,000 heads!

Fortunately for us, we have had been thrifty. There was never any extra hand we could do without! Yes, the Lord has blessed us! Todate we have one digit growth over last year. However, this is still not good enough for the trade.

So Lord, bless your people, your creation, in these difficult times.

Aunt Grace

This week we see the passing of a Grand Old Lady, Mrs Grace Lee, at age 92. If there are a number of persons who has left a great impression in my life, one outstanding person is Aunt Grace.

Aunt Grace is truly a lady of substance and has lived as depicted by her name - gracefully! So in honour of her, here are some of the incidences and legacy she has forever imprinted on me!

Aunt Grace lead me gently to Christ. I remember when I first went with her to Church, she asked me - are you changed and ready for church yet? Why, I asked. I am dressed in my best working suit. Alas it was not a skirt. But Aunt Grace did not say I can't wear pants. Instead the now familiar statement came - "In those days" when we go to church we have to wear long skirts; we must not show our knees!

Is tradition too old fashion? We see young people in sphagetti straps and bare-back t-shirts and hip-hanging pants, exposing most of the mid-rift and more. Am I now too old fashion or old enough to adopt Aunt Grace's opinion:
"in those days" we are taught that when we enter the Sanctuary, it is the house of the Lord. We are in the presence of the Lord, we should have decorum even in our dressing.

I remember too, one of my arguments with Aunt Grace. If the Sanctuary is holy, why do we see pastors praying for the Lord's protection and to banish the devil, whilst we are worshipping in the Sanctuary. Well, I never got any reply. Aunt Grace believed that all pastors, as servants of God is above reproof. This is representative of the generation before.

It was in one of my evening walks round the neighbourhood that I decided I would accept Christ and be baptised. My tears started streaming out non-stop; though I was not crying, sobbing or wailing!

Aunt Grace took out a glass and filled it with water. She said a short prayer and gave me the glass of water to drink. After which my tears stopped. It wasn't a big theatrical prayer or an exorcism scene. Just a a short, convicted prayer of an 84 year old lady who has been praying daily, for most of her life.

So now, despite all the theological arguments, I believe in the Holy communion! I believe that we do not need fancy ordained personnel to conduct and give out Sacraments. I believe that females are just as capable to hold the position of priests or pastors! I believe that we - males, females or otherwise - only need to believe and have inner conviction and live gracefully in His Glory. Our Lord will perform miracles through us and our life. Anything else is peripheral and man-made!

May the Lord bless Aunt Grace!

ultra-vires

Well, we learnt in Ethics, that there is nothing wrong with Money, Sex and Power. The problem is how we exploit and abuse it as a human being; and especially as Christians, forgetting who is our ultimate authority.

Just about nine years ago, I hear of the term 'ultra vires'. Ultra vires means 'beyond one's authority'.

Then it involves a church. Then the church has RM9m in a safe-deposit account and boast of 2,000 members. Then I was quoted I Corinthians 6:6 that all authority was put in place by God. Then I was very angry and decided to go and learn the Scripture for myself.

So now the church's coffer is empty, with updated 900 members and a proposed New Youth center abandoned for want of support. Worship trend and world economy is not any excuse as I have witnessed generous support in another!

Then our country had an autocratic PM. Then the people didn't mind as we enjoyed wealth, exporting oil. We have a national car, bought Ferrari and have our own satellite. Then it works to perpectuate the colonial policy of divide and rule, always raising the 'race card'.

So now our country will have a new PM by 16th March. We no longer have the wealth with oil at US30++ a barrel. We sold Ferrari for a song. We owe foreign banks for the development we have enjoyed. The race card doesn't work any more. People are more 'educated' and IT savy. They no longer accept our ruling political party's blatant action. They have become braver and take to the streets!

So now, that I am a half-full vessel, I wait patiently on the outcome, for I know not His ways. I am waiting in the wings for His call. The next decade will be interesting for all!

So I copied this analysis to remind me about ultra-vires...

Title: the arrogrance of a novice judge by NH Chan
NH CHAN, is a former Court of Appeal judge, retired and lives in Ipoh.
This is an abridged version of the original article.

Courts can’t question validity of assembly decisions:-
According to newspaper reports, the case is an application by (BN-appointed menteri besar) Zambry Abd Kadir to the court to declare the decision of speaker Sivakumar in the legislative assembly to suspend him and his six exco members as unconstitutional and unlawful.
The question is, can the courts decide on the validity of the proceedings in the Legislative Assembly?
The answer is staring at us right here in the Federal Constitution. Article 72, Clauses (1) to (3) states:
(1) The validity of any proceedings in the Legislative Assembly of any State shall not be questioned in any court.
(2) No person shall be liable to any proceedings in any court in respect of anything said or any vote given by him when taking part in proceedings of the Legislative Assembly of any State or of any committee thereof.
(3) No person shall be liable to any proceedings in any court in respect of anything published by or under the authority of the Legislative Assembly of any state.”

So now you know from the Federal Constitution itself that the validity of the suspension of Zambry and his six Exco members by the speaker in the State Assembly cannot be questioned in any court.

From what we have read from the newspapers, it seems that there is an injunction against the speaker. You may wonder how an injunction can be obtained against the speaker when our written constitution says that “no person shall be liable to any proceedings in any court in respect of anything said or any vote given by him when taking part in proceedings of the Legislative Assembly of the State.

my garden 1

From my garden, using my new gizmo...
My passion other than my God, work and studies...

my waterlily collection

african rose??

Will include the real if not latin names one day!

Since we are talking about flowers. Do you know I never get to see a proper bloom of my lantern hibiscus that is growing next to the fence. And you would think that hibiscus are proliferate bloomers!

Story is: There is an elderly man who passes my house for his morning walk at 7am. Without fail, he will pluck all the blooms for the day. When confronted he said it is to offer to his Hindu god. So I asked him politely, why pray to a god that encourages, if not demands one to steal. Other than the nasty look which could kill, he has not stopped doing it! Sigh!

being bossy...

I have been told off before by my brother - "don't just because you are so used to instructing (bossing) people around in your office, you should come back home and do the same! Well, I committed the same folly again in class today!

We were broken up into groups! After realising that we were at a loss what to do with analysing a Company Sustainability Report, yours truly 'took over'. I did not apologise for bossy them around but just gave specific jobs for each to do! After which our group presented a rather respectable report.

I hope we have all learnt something. I have. I realise I would not be a good youth leader or a good prayer warrior and definitely not a long suffering church worker! Yet, this potpurri of personality makes up the body of Christ! Together as Christians, we could change the Business World - which was what our lecturer was trying to tell us subtlely anyway!

business ethics

Today is the second day of business ehtics.
It was good to see so many new faces! So much interest in His Word! Sure reminds me of the time when I first started! Then it seems like such a long march ahead! But He has taken me through all these years! Praise the Lord indeed!

One thing I do realise and now re-confirmed! Those classmates who are half way through has started asking - what next! I have to clarify that I was definitely not the one who instigated! One could see that once we start on His Word, the hunger for more is fueled!

Then it was fun! Fun because we were a bit rowdy! It is actually good to have 'middle aged' classmates! They were much more vocal hence lively discussions! To be fair, this subject is of real life situation and we are from such a varied differnt walks of the business world!

To give credit to our foreign lecturer, he is a good facilator. We did go on about the various not very Christian practices that is common here! Solution? If we could work as a Christian group, it will affect change! Except we are generally alone, in the 'big, bad world' when we break up after class! What do we do then? Remember Micah 8:6.

Looking forward to the session on corruption planned for next week!
